Testing out Squidoo

November 25, 2008

One part of being a virtual assistant is staying current on internet trends, services, and websites so that we can bring these tools to the table when working with our clients. With that intention in mind, I am currently focusing on improving our resources for developing a web presence for small businesses. This is a task that many of our clients are interested in.

One website for doing exactly that is Squidoo which is a service that allows anyone to quickly and easily create an informative webpage on any topic. These informative webpages are called “lenses” and they are ranked according to popularity. There is the opportunity to earn income from the ads placed on your lens.

It’s a website that allows you to contribute your knowledge on any topic and by doing so establish yourself as an authority. You are able to link to your website so any visitors that stumble upon your “lens” can then navigate to your website and enter your sales process.

I recently created a lens with some tips on getting started with a virtual assistant to see if it gets any hits, refers any traffic to our website, or does anything at all. I’ll post updates here of any progress the lens makes. I imagine that it needs to get spidered into the search engines before anything starts happening so I’ll have to be patient for another month or two.

I can definitely see how creating lenses could become addictive, it’s fun trying to get your rank higher. Currently, our lens is ranked at 82,446 overall.

UPDATE 02/23/09 -

Lens rank: 238,421 overall

Lifetime visits: 14

Clicks to website: 0

Verdict: Not a great ROI

Perhaps there is something flawed about the lens I created that I’m unaware of, but I think it provides good, useful content. Given this, I fail to see why it is not more popular.

14 visits to the lens and no one clicking through to our website is not a good return on the time invested.

UPDATE: After more than a year the only clear benefit from the creation of that lens was a couple of “do follow” links (most sites like this, such as hubpages, use “nofollow” links).
