What’s the deal with google Instant Search?

Nothing says “I’m a complete and total nerd” like getting into a heated debate about Google’s instant search feature and it’s effect an SEO. I haven’t gotten into a debate (yet) but I am blogging about it, so I suppose that is equally nerdy.

You’ve probably heard the saying “It’s not the destination it’s the journey.” Well thanks to Googles instant search, this saying now also applies to the internet!

In the past users would perform one search at a time by typing in a keyword, pressing enter, and viewing the search results. Now the search begins with the first letter of the search phrase, and continues to change as each consecutive letter of the search phase is typed. Instead of one big search, your making a lot of little ones along the way.

A lot of people are up in arms about this. They say it will kill SEO. Not true. I’m not industry expert but I can tell you that if there are search engines, there will be search engine optimization. Instant search just complicates things. Searching used to be a black and white opperation:

Search phrase  -> Result

The goal was to be on the first page of the results. Now the search will morph along the way as you type. Meaning it won’t just matter where you stand at the end, but where you are at in the beginning, middle, and end!

Let’s take a look at what a person will see when searching for the phrase “virtual assistant”

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

So long as a person does not get distracted by verizon, victoria’s secret, virgin mobile, or virtual pianos, they will end up arriving at the search phrase they wanted “virtual assistant” and will find LongerDays.com on the first page!! Okay so I photoshopped us into the number 1 spot…

The true motive behind Instant Search? I think the big corporations are paying a kick back to google to show up at the beginning of every search based on a single letter. Advertising!
